Players usually play a number of hands, but in a standard game, only a few players are required. An ideal number is six to eight. If the number of players exceeds the ideal number, more than one may be in contention for the pot.
A player’s hand is usually dealt in two rounds: a face-up round, and a face-down round. Often, a 5-card hand is dealt face-up, but it can be dealt face-down or face-up and face-down.
The dealer is the person who deals each hand. This player has the last right to shuffle the cards and the first right to cut the pack.
